Chris Slater

Chris is a Plein Air Artist working in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. His studio and gallery are located within R.O.A.R but he can be spotted outside painting as often as he can, capturing the light and scenes of Rotherham. He runs a Plein Air workshop from The Imperial Buildings during the summer and in the winter he runs studio workshops and tuition. He also give demonstrations to Art Societies around the region. Chris likes to start the day early to catch the morning light, as lighting and colour are at the centre of his art. Unlike a photograph, a scene is captured over a few hours, giving the work a unique feel and atmosphere. People walking by and saying hello is all part of the interaction with the environment that Chris captures. He has exhibited in London at the Mall Gallery in exhibitions by the RSMA – Royal Society of Marine Artists and Royal Oil Institute, Hull Open Art, Barnsley Open Art and Sheffield Great Art Show amongst others, receiving “The favourite painting” by public vote on many occasions. Chris studied BA Fine Art at Sheffield University in his early 20s, but it wasn’t until he visited an exhibition in Doncaster on Modern Impressionists that he moved his work from illustration to Plein Air Art. That was 17 years ago and he has been painting outdoors ever since, building up a collection of work that runs to thousands of canvases. He has painted in the open air around the world in beautiful landscapes across America, Italy, France, Spain, Northumberland, Cornwall, and the East Coast of England. His studio and gallery is available for viewing by appointment as he is often out painting.
