Sheep by Barrie Jones

Sheep by Barrie Jones

Sheep by Barrie Jones is a colourful addition to the Chantry Buildings on Corporation Street. A largely self-taught artist, Barrie Jones, surrealist works are influenced by music such as David Bowie and Pink Floyd and also by science fiction. The son of a coal mineworker, Barrie grew up in the Dearne Valley and went into the Royal Navy after leaving school with no formal qualifications. He began painting in his twenties after studying at evening classes and found that art helped him find expression for his own feelings and ideas. Barrie describes himself as "seriously dyslexic." From his own studio/gallery at the popular Elsecar Heritage Centre near Barnsley, Barrie's surrealist work is popular throughout the world. He has also mastered photography and digital imaging and has established a "Heroes" business supplying canvases inspired by music and pop culture. Barrie said: "I would describe my work as honest. When I paint I have no idea what the image will be, and sometimes that image can be disturbing. I do not think art should be elitist nor should it matter how it is produced, what should be important is what it has to say about the place and time it is produced and whether others can relate to it or not."
