Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer

Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer

One of the most recognizable historical pieces in the world, Girl with a Pearl Earring was originally painted in 1665. Even now the painting is a much discussed item among scholars and critics, due to the unknown identity of the subject. Many believe the girl to be Vermeer's eldest daughter Maria, however there is no base for this claim besides the age compatibility. Others believe that it could be the daughter of his patron, Pieter Van Rujivan. It is also frequently suggested in fictional literature that the girl could be a servant, hired by Vermeer.
